Everyone’s hopping on the 5G bandwagon these days, and if you’re not in it too, you’re kinda missing out. After all, the slowest 5G speed in Malaysia is about 5x faster than regular old 4G.
If you’re on an older postpaid plan, you may want to consider reviewing it because many telcos are offering 5G postpaid plans with cheaper prices. Thing is though, the lowest price may not get you the best value because of data allocation. In other words, you may be paying more per GB of data.
With the launch of their Infinite 12 Months campaign, Yes 5G has dropped the price of their Infinite Basic plan to RM38 if you sign up for a 12-month contract. And what does that plan come with? Well, let’s compare it to the cheapest postpaid 5G plans we found.
Malaysia’s cheapest 5G postpaid plans ranked according to price per GB
For reference, the 6 telcos we looked into were:
Here’s the data you’ll be getting for the price. We included hotspot allocation as well, since that’s important for a lot of students and people who work on-the-go.
So when it comes to the cheapest plan, Yes 5G’s Infinite Basic plan takes the win by default, with the cost of RM0/GB. Uncapped data basically means infinite, and – fun fact – dividing anything by infinity results in zero.
Next, you might be wondering why some plans have xGB + yGB instead of just giving you a straight-up total. Like why say 80GB + 80GB instead of 160GB?
Well, that’s because these plans have a base allocation and an additional allocation if you sign up for a 12-month plan. Not just that, the additional allocation is only for 5G, while the base is for 4G and 5G. In other words, any 5G usage will be deducted from your additional allocation first, before touching the base data. Meanwhile, hotspot and 4G will makan your base data. Confusing, right?
The confusion doesn’t stop there. The additional data also comes with additional caveats – different for each telco – such as requiring a 12-month contract, for a limited time, or potentially speed throttling (click here to read more about Fair Usage Policy (FUP)). You’ll need to dig into the terms and conditions for each telco for the specifics.
In contrast Yes 5G makes things as straightforward as possible.
With any of their postpaid plans, you’ll be getting uncapped data and speed (so no throttling), and unlimited 5G roaming in Singapore to boot. You don’t have to brain stuff like additional data, base data, quotas, FUP. The only difference is that the price is cheaper when you take a 12-month contract.
Actually, Yes 5G dropped the prices for ALL their postpaid plans!
While the Infinite Basic plan should be enough, you may need more than 20GB of hotspot data. If that’s the case, you can save more when signing up for a 12-month contract with Yes 5G’s other plans:
- Infinite Basic (20GB Hotspot) | RM58 → RM38 (Save RM20/month)
- Infinite Standard (50GB Hotspot) | RM88 → RM58 (Save RM30/month)
- Infinite Premium (80GB Hotspot) | RM118 → RM78 (Save RM40/month)
- Infinite Ultra (110GB Hotspot) | RM178 → RM98 (Save RM80/month)
With the exception of hotspot, all these plans come with the same perks including free unlimited 5G roaming in Singapore, physical and eSIM availability, and the option of adding up to 4 supplementary lines at RM20 each.
If data allocation and price are the most important factors to you, then you really can’t beat the value of uncapped data.
Of course, there’s also the question of coverage – no point getting a 5G plan if you’re in an area with no 5G coverage. The good news is that Yes 5G will let you try out their network for 30 days absolutely FREE if you have a phone that supports eSIM. That means, you’ll enjoy uncapped 4G AND 5G data, speed, and calls for a whole month with no commitment.
