Win a year of free A&W for their 60th b’day in Malaysia

It wasn’t til last year that we found out A&W holds the honor of being the first fast-food chain in Malaysia. It was apparently a HUGE thing when the first outlet opened in 1963, and even a prince from the royal family took up a job as a burger flipper.

As such, their 60th anniversary event was an equal banger – held at their 100th outlet in Puchong (which looks like a classical diner) with VIPs such as A&W Malaysia’s CEO George Ang, A&W Restaurants Chairman Kevin Bazner, representatives from the National A&W Franchisee Association, and – perhaps the most important VIP of all:

Why every 80's and 90's kid wanted their birthday at A&W
ROOTY!

At the ‘birthday speech’, CEO George Ang was looking at the future through the past – not only recounting the company’s history and heritage in Malaysia but also giving us a peek into the future with product and customer experience innovations.

Perhaps nothing exemplifies this more than their self-ordering kiosks which are modern touchscreen devices decorated in a retro frame… kinda reminiscent of drive-in order stations you see in old movies.

Unfortunately we forgot to take a picture of the kiosks sebab, nostalgia.

A&W was a birthday party venue for many a kid
Okay fine. It’s because this writer saw Rooty and became a kid again

Speaking of nostalgia, you can win yourself a Golden Ticket that’ll get you a year of unlimited Coneys and RB! As part of the celebration, A&W announced their #AnWSippingIntoTheFuture campaign, which brings a trove of promotion and freebies. At the centre of this is a contest where one lucky Malaysian stands to win that Golden Ticket.

To join, all you need is……nostalgia.

MC Lemon and A&W Malaysia CEO George Ang

All you have to do is think of a time where A&W was part of a special moment in your life, like that special meal of curly fries and floats with your grandparents or crying because you wanted to bring Rooty back home with you after a birthday party (totally not this writer’s own story). All you have to do is recreate these moments in a short and sweet video.

Here are the instructions:

  1. Make your account is public and follow @anwmalaysia on Instagram.
  2. To participate, create a feed post and include a short story or explanation in the post
caption, highlighting your fondest memory of A&W.
  3. Post caption must include @anwmalaysia and both campaign hashtags:
    #AnWMalaysia #AnWSippingIntoTheFuture
  4. Tag three friends in the post caption to join the contest and keep the fun going!

Winners will be announced on 7th December 2023, on all A&W social media platforms.

With plans to open 150 outlets throughout Malaysia by 2025 (and 250 by 2028), a story that stuck out to us came from MC Lemon, who shared how A&W was a special stop for her family on trips down to Seremban from her hometown in Perlis, so it was an extra special for her to MC the opening of A&W’s first outlet in Perlis just the day before.
