Here’s how Sunway Medical Centre became a world class hospital in just 25 years

If you’ve been around long enough, you probably remember a time when Sunway Medical Centre (SMC) was just another hospital in the Klang Valley. Fast forward 25 years, and it has grown into Malaysia’s largest private quaternary hospital, racking up achievements like a gaming nerd collecting trophies.

From humble beginnings to a healthcare titan

Founded in November 1999, SMC started with a mission to serve the community’s healthcare needs. Today, it boasts 724 licensed beds, over 60 medical specialities, and 28 Centres of Excellence. Basically, if you’ve got a health issue, chances are they’ve got a specialist for it.

“Our anniversary serves as a moment of reflection and an opportunity to reaffirm our commitment to delivering top-tier healthcare to our patients while advancing our innovation, and we look forward to continuing to grow our services and expand our footprint in the healthcare industry.”

Dr. Seow Vei Ken, Chief Executive Officer of Sunway Medical Centre, Sunway City

Tech & Innovation: Like Iron Man, but for Healthcare

SMC isn’t just about big numbers; it’s also pushing the boundaries of medical technology. They got Robot-Assisted Surgeries and are the first private hospital in Malaysia to hit over 3,000 robot-assisted surgeries. Imagine getting operated on by a super-precise robot while human doctors oversee the whole thing. Cool, right?

Paediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU): This isn’t your average hospital ward. The PICU is led by two Paediatric Intensivists and a team covering 24 paediatric subspecialties, combining smart tech with expert care.

Haematology Lab That’s Basically World-Class: The Special Haematology Laboratory is accredited by the College of American Pathologists (CAP), a big deal in the lab world. Plus, they’ve recently started treating paediatric bone marrow transplant patients.

Sunway Medical Centre has 3 major accreditations

When you’re doing things right, people take notice. SMC is the first private hospital in Malaysia to get three major international accreditations:

  • Joint Commission International (JCI) Gold Seal of Approval (USA)
  • Australian Council on Healthcare Standards (ACHS)
  • Malaysian Society for Quality in Health (MSQH).

Oh, and they’re also listed among Newsweek’s World’s Best Hospitals 2024. Not bad for a Malaysian hospital, eh? Check out their other accreditations and awards here.

But SMC isn’t just about high-tech gadgets and fancy awards. They’re also serious about keeping the community healthy as seen below:

SunMed Vitality Festival (Dec 2024): This event at the MBPJ Multipurpose Hall had everything from first-aid demos to fitness workouts and even a health-conscious food marketplace.

“Time to Move” Wellness Programme (Oct 2024): A collab with Samsung Malaysia, this 90-day program aimed to get Malaysians off their couches and into healthier lifestyles.

Sunway Medical Centre future plans

Just when you think SMC couldn’t get any bigger, they’re planning to expand to 1,104 beds by Q3 2026 with a new children’s medical centre. That’s like adding an entire new hospital inside an already huge hospital!

25 years ago, SMC set out to transform healthcare, and it looks like they’ve done just that. Whether it’s cutting-edge tech, top-tier medical talent, or community-driven initiatives, they’re proving that Malaysia can compete with the best in the world.

Here’s to another 25 years of medical awesomeness!
