KL heart hospital successfully completes 50th minimally invasive heart valve transplant

Life-saving surgeries get a lot more complicated with older patients – what’s normally a standard procedure becomes a lot more risky when the body can no longer tahan the shock of an operation and the strain of recovery.

This is one of the reasons that less invasive medical procedures are being developed, allowing life-saving surgeries to be performed on patients who need them the most.

It might come as good news to those facing aortic stenosis, a heart condition which occurs when the valve between the left ventricle and aorta doesn’t open completely due to calcification; making it difficult for blood to flow to the rest of the body. The solution usually involves replacing or widening the valve through traditional open-heart surgery, where the surgeon cuts through the breastbone to reach the heart; making it unsuitable for severe cases and older patients.

The Cardiology unit at Cardiac Vascular Sentral Kuala Lumpur (CVSKL) recently achieved a significant milestone by successfully completing its 50th Transcatheter Aortic Valve Implantation (TAVI) procedure. The TAVI procedure is a highly complex, minimally invasive procedure available for people with severe aortic stenosis where surgery may not be suitable; and was first performed at CVSKL in 2019.

This 2-hour procedure was led by consultant cardiologist Datuk Dr. Rosli with consultant cardiologists Datuk Dr. Tamil Selvan Muthusamy and Dr. Choo Gim Hooi as second and third operators respectively. Renowned for his pioneering work on the TAVI procedure, Datuk Dr. Rosli shared:

“The TAVI procedure has been a game-changer in the treatment of severe aortic stenosis, providing options to patients who are not suitable to undergo open surgery.

The outstanding teamwork here between my colleagues and the entire cathlab team ensures that all complex cases are well coordinated to ensure better outcomes and quality of care.” – Datuk Dr. Rosli

Established in 2020, the Structural Heart Centre of Excellence program in CVSKL functions to diagnose and treat structural heart conditions that affect that hearts’ valves, walls, chambers, and muscles of the heart. CVSKL states that their achievement of this milestone demonstrates its commitment to providing patients with the most advanced and innovative treatments available, and how it continues to play a vital role in the advancement of heart healthcare in Malaysia and beyond.
