We were just bored and browsing Google Play Store for something fun when we came across a few uniquely Malaysian games. Not because they were created by Malaysian developers, but mainly coz the culture is uniquely and hilariously Malaysian. And they’re possibly…seditiousss 😛 Most of the seditious ones are political or related to politics.
Of course we couldn’t resist downloading them. We’re not expert gamers or anything k guys, this is just a lil review of how the game is played and what’s the seditious storyline behind it. It’s all just casual gaming.
Without further ado, here are 6 possibly seditious Malaysian games you can download on Play Store:
1. Kangkung – Fast Paced Action
Rating: 4 star
Seriously, this game exists! You start of with a character named JB (who looks uncannily like the PM) and the objective is to collect as much kangkung as you can, while avoiding polis roadblock, traffic police speed trap, Lynas drums and Touch n’ Go tolls.
In the second level, you’re pushing a wheelbarrow to catch kangkungs falling from the sky, but watch out for those falling Lynas drums too. You don’t wanna catch those or they’ll go BOOOOM! In the third level, quickly unchain JB from the weight of BR1M so that he can jet upwards into space and snag more kangkungs. We only managed to get to the third level because we keep dying, but we shall persevere!
Once you achieve 500 points, you’ll unlock Limmy, a character that looks like either Lim Kit Siang or Guan Eng (our team couldn’t decide, what do you guys think?). With 1,000 points you’ll unlock Mat, a character that appears to be Nik Aziz. The final character is Annon, who looks obviously like Anwar. But we dunno how many points you need to unlock him (it says “???” on the screen). Maybe need to achieve democracy first to unlock Anwar???
2. Conquest of Putrajaya HD
Rating: 4.2 star
Feeling dissatisfied with elections results? Even if you can’t change it in reality, you can in games! In Conquest of Putrajaya, you choose to play either BN or PKR and conquer seven cities. Your mission is to defend your party and win the hearts of the rakyat.
The more stars you collect, the more you can expand your Unit – there is the Ink Splatter Unit, wich uses a pen to splash ink on his enemy, Team Leader Unit shouts slogans to defeat the enemy and win voters’ hearts, Singer On Da Truck which stuns the opponents by singing with their lovely voice. 😀
Unfortunately the game must be buggy or something because it won’t open (tried it on five different phones in the office). Such a pity coz it looks like so much fun! Fix please, developer! Anyway, watch the trailer here.
3. Crappy Bomoh
Rating: 4.2 star
Malaysians once again demonstrate how we’re tops at trolling… Remember when Ibrahim Mat Zin (aka Raja Bomoh Sedunia Nujum VIP) conducted rituals at KLIA in 2014, supposedly to help find the missing MH370 plane? He was helped by his assistants using coconuts, “Zam-Zam” water, a magic walking stick and carpet. The incident drew so much ridicule from Malaysians as well as overseas, with some even spoofing his stunts. Here’s the original:
Now the spoofs have gone one step further into games. The concept is simple, it’s EXACTLY like Flappy Bird but just replace the bird with the three guys on the magic carpet. We have to tap the screen to make them go upwards and not crash into the green pillars. Okla it’s not very original, but Flappy Bird got taken off Play Store aldy so if you missed it, download this. So how is this seditious? Ermm, well, it could incite “hate” towards Raja Bomoh, couldn’t it?
Then we found this other game called Flappy Politician. It’s not Malaysian, but worth mentioning coz it features Malaysian politicians like Najib, Mahathir and others (oddly enough all BN politicians). Actually, we also found a few other bomoh games, all same concept.
Also try: Flying Bomoh and Flying Bomohs
4. Zombie Run
Rating: 4.1 star
Kampung Kangkung is overrun with ZOMBIES after innocent villagers accidentally eat poisonous kangkung. As long as their diet remains only kangkung, the villagers will never escape the zombie curse.
But how to change diet when only harga kangkung turun while everything else naik? Disclaimer, this last line is from CILISOS, not part of the game’s storyline. Anyhoo, it’s not hard to tie back ‘possibly seditious’ content to this game, because, kangkung – in 2014, Najib remarked that kangkung prices went down in response to the rakyat’s protest against rising prices. Peepur even made a remix video. Not to mention the game might ‘incite hatred and fear’ di kalangan rakyat against zombies.
Now you must help Sawie (the hero) run for his life. Using simple one touch gameplay, you make Sawie jump over and slide under obstacles to escape the zombie mob. Actually the game could have been a lot funner, but it feels like it has a lag problem and Sawie keeps dying at the first obstacle. 🙁
5. Go Najib Go
Rating: 4.2 star
Go Najib Go is very easy to play – just slide left to fight bad guys attacking from the left, and slide right to attack bad guys attacking from the right. You play as Najib, a martial arts master, fighting random baddies coming at you for who knows what reason. There’s no plot explained in the game. Each swipe elicits a punch or kick (kinda like the real Najib deflecting every criticism thrown at him).
It doesn’t take very long to grow bored of this game (maybe we just stink at it). We also feel it’s kinda laggy la, so it’s a bit hard to win (or maybe we just really, really stink at it). But yeah, we’ll not be keeping this game.
6. Defending Malaysia
Rating: 4.1 star
Our worst nightmare comes true in this game! Malaysia’s Petronas Twin Towers are under attack and homing missiles in the form of maths questions are falling in every direction (homing missiles aaand maths? double whammy!). Your job is to defuse the missiles by solving the equation before the missile hits the target, so get that calculator cracking fast!
But yeah, shooting missiles at Petronas Twin Towers is quite seditious dontchu think? Especially with the current climate of fear.
At least it has an educational purpose. Don’t worry, it only gives addition, subtraction, division and multiplication equations – no super tough Add Maths equations like algebra, index, trigonometry and stuff. Otherwise by the time you finish solving it explode already lor. This is what happens if you don’t answer on time:
Actually, Malaysia has really talented developers who came up with HUGE games
They’ve proven their worth by producing some seriously big games like Uncharted 4, Street Fighter 5, Dark Souls 3, Batman: Arkham Knight, Mortal Kombat X and Gears of War. Even orang asing praised us:
“We recognize that there are an increasing number of talented game studios in South East Asia region, particularly in Malaysia. The case of Passion Republic’s involvement in “Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End” is a fine example of top-notch talents in Malaysia contributing to the development of our stellar titles.” – Naito Arata, Product Manager of Sony Interactive Entertainment Singapore, gamehubs.com
But when you combine that talent with Malaysian current events and pop culture, you get these hilarious, possibly seditious boredom busters. Some of the games, we thought went too far, but there are plenty more good Malaysian developed games on Play Store which aren’t so seditious, check them out here.
One of them, Roll Spike Sepak Takraw has gotten positive reviews on international game publications (here and here), that not only praised the game, but the actual sport itself! Roll Spike is the FIRST ever sepak takraw phone game in the world that you can download from the App Store and Google Play Store.
“I love sports games but the market is dominated by popular Western sports such as football, basketball and tennis. We wanted to create a game that was not only enjoyable but reflected our local culture, which we did with Li-Ning Badminton Jump Smash.” – Havene Liew, Managing Director of Mediasoft Entertainment, gamasutra.com
What can we say. Malaysians are the shiznit #proudMalaysian
