CelcomDigi collaborates with Bornean artists to produce captivating Gawai Kaamatan film

CelcomDigi Gawai Kaamatan

With Gawai Kaamatan just around the corner, East Malaysians have begun booking their flights back home and are gearing up for this year’s Harvest Festival. In conjunction with this cultural event, CelcomDigi, along with NagaDDB Tribal and M&C Saatchi, have collaborated with several Bornean artists and filmmakers to create Nadi‘.

Nadi‘ is a breathtaking docu-film and music project, centered around the themes of connecting with nature, and celebration of the bountiful harvest that was gifted to the people of Borneo. Directed by Kelabit filmmaker Sarah Lois Dorai, it tells the story of three Bornean musicians – Sape’ musician Alena Murang, music producer Joshua Maran, and Sundatang revivalist Gindung, who are on a mission to compose an instrumental piece that would bring them closer to their roots.

The docu-film features stunning visuals, and music… made by plants

As it turns out, plants CAN be used to make music. And we aren’t just talking about the wood from trees used to make guitars.

Utilising sonification technology to turn plant vibrations into sound waves, the musicians harvested the sounds of paddy plants, soil, flowers, which were then transmitted to a recording studio where they were used to create a harmony. The harmonies were then weaved together with modern and traditional instruments like the Sape’, Sundatang, and Kulintangan, to create a beautiful melody that celebrates the essence of nature. Thus, highlighting the natural beauty of the land, which is a prevalent theme in the celebration of Gawai.

You can give this short mesmerising film a watch on CelcomDigi’s YouTube channel, or check it out on their Facebook page.
