Nippon Paint turns historic spots into stunning art hubs

If you’ve been wandering around the streets of KL lately, you might’ve noticed some next-level street art popping up in unexpected places. That’s thanks to a vibrant collaboration between Nippon Paint Malaysia and Think City, which brought together local artists to transform historical landmarks into creative playgrounds as part of the Kreatif Kuala Lumpur Festival (KKLF).

These art installations aren’t just pretty to look at—they’re part of a bigger plan to breathe life back into KL’s historic hotspots, making them fun, walkable, and 100% worth the trip. And here’s the best part: the installations are sticking around until March 2025, so you’ve got time to plan your visit and flood your Instagram feed.

Art that tells stories and sparks joy

Play! KL @ Medan Pasar

The project reimagines three iconic KL locations—Medan Pasar, Old High Court, and Benteng Pasar Seni—with unique art pieces created by some of Malaysia’s most talented designers. From interactive playgrounds to AR-powered history lessons, each installation offers something to tickle your curiosity.

“It is gratifying to play a part in bringing local artists’ visions to life in such a bustling area with our paint and tools. At Nippon Paint, we believe in the power of creativity to transform spaces and lives.”

Datin Wong Meng Lee, Assistant General Manager of Nippon Paint Malaysia

The Malaysian Institute of Art (MIA) turned Medan Pasar into a playground for everyone. Think colourful modular structures that could be a bench, a wall, or even a mini obstacle course. Inspired by KL’s vibrant downtown vibe, it’s an open invitation to let your inner child loose. Whether you’re hopping between pieces or snapping pics, it’s impossible not to feel the energy of this revamped old market square.

Kota AR at Benteng Pasar Seni – Suzy Sulaiman merges tradition with tech in this mind-blowing installation inspired by Tikar Mengkuang. Whip out your phone, scan some QR codes, and you’ll uncover stories from KL’s past, like the iconic pink mini-buses or traders’ tales from Central Market’s early days. It’s like a history book that lives in your phone, layered over geometric patterns and vibrant colours straight out of KL’s Art Deco glory.

Tiang Tamu at the Old High Court – Nabihah Haiyee’s work celebrates Malaysian resilience with a stunning model of the traditional rumah ibu. Built to last (literally—it’s made of acrylic and steel), it bridges KL’s kampung past with its urban present. Pro tip: check out the old photos incorporated into the design—it’s like a time machine but way cooler.

Nippon Paint is more than just pretty colours

Behind every bold colour and weather-proof finish is Nippon Paint’s Total Coating and Construction Solutions (TCCS). These aren’t your average paints—think coatings tough enough to handle Malaysia’s unpredictable weather while looking fresh AF.

“At Think City, we believe in catalysing public, private and community partnerships in transforming and revitalising the city. By partnering with Nippon Paint, we are able to show how design have the power to strengthen a city’s creative economy and identity, showcasing both local and international artists while further establishing Kuala Lumpur as a burgeoning cultural centre in the region and beyond.”

Dato’ Hamdan Abdul Majeed, Managing Director of Think City

With over 800 litres of paint used, including fan favourites like Weatherbond® Ultimate and PU Recoatable Paint, Nippon Paint brought these artists’ visions to life. Whether it’s wood, cement, or metal, they’ve proven that the right tools (and a lot of creativity) can transform any surface into art.
