Growing up in the 90s Hot Wheels was every child’s dream. How many of you still remember the Hot Wheels advertisements on TV?
For nearly 50 years, Hot Wheels has been known for sparking and fostering the challenger spirit that lies within every child in order to help them realize their full potential. In connection with Mattel Malaysia’s 40th-anniversary celebration, Hot Wheels and PROTON announced a prototype of their very first collaboration: a Hot Wheels 1:64 scale diecast of the legendary 1985 Proton Saga, Malaysia’s first national car, in 2022.
The Hot Wheels Proton Saga will join the world’s best-selling Hot Wheels singles collection, of which Mattel Malaysia is the sole manufacturer.

With the introduction of the Hot Wheels x PROTON Kids Design Competition in 2023, Hot Wheels and PROTON decided to make their collaboration even more important.
The businesses asked schoolchildren from throughout the country to participate in this historic initiative by designing a blister card that encapsulated the essence of “A Malaysian National Car” to be featured in a special version of the product.
Over 386 aspirants between the ages of 4 and 12 submitted their entries, which were a riot of patriotic blues, whites, reds, and yellows. However, Saw Jane Harn, 9, came out as the champion in this competition.
Saw’s design depicts and commemorates a variety of Malaysia’s natural elements and achievements, including the country’s national bird and flower, the rhinoceros hornbill, and the National Monument. The Malaysian themes chosen for her design are a perfect representation of our wonderful country. Her artistic interpretation of these obviously Malaysian icons would make an excellent setting for the Hot Wheels Proton Saga.
The top three design producers in the contest, as well as three consolation prize winners, received cash awards, Hot Wheels products, limited edition Hot Wheels merchandise, and an exclusive meet and greet with Matt Gabe, Hot Wheels Lead Packaging Designer, who was visiting from El Segundo.
