Who are the people in charge of MySJ Sdn Bhd? We bought their SSM record to find out

Recently, Anwar Ibrahim brought up data privacy concerns of Malaysians using the MySejahtera app, which was recently acquired by MySJ Sdn Bhd, a private limited company. Most notable of these concerns were that MySJ Sdn Bhd has ties to Entomo (formerly known as KPISoft), who developed the app.

However, the government has denied that the app had been sold to anyone, and that Malaysians’ data was in safe hands:

Naturally, we were curious as to who MySJ Sdn Bhd are, but instead of just Googling their company info, we decided to go a step further and purchase their SSM (Companies Commission of Malaysia) record to see who were some of the people in charge.

And here are the names we found on their list of directors:

1) Tan Sri Shahril Shamsuddin

Area of expertise: Oil and Gas

Affiliation: Sapura Energy

Image from: Astro Awani

Possibly the most high-profile director on the list, Tan Sri Shahril Shamsuddin was one of the two names mentioned by Anwar Ibrahim in his damning allegations, suggesting that Shahril was someone with ‘political and business connections to parties in the ruling coalition government’ because of his status as former CEO of Sapura Energy. But despite giving up his CEO position, he remains a shareholder of the company, owning an indirect stake of 12.94% (2.07 billion shares).

For context, Sapura Energy is a GLC (government-linked company) that suffered the largest-ever loss of any Malaysian GLC in history last year (RM8.9 billion), and whose relevance to the information/software technology field was ‘questionable’, according to Anwar.

Other than that, Tan Sri Shahril himself has quite the impressive résumé, guiding Sapura Energy to numerous accolades and earning some for himself in the process, including the 2007 Legion d’Honneur from France and the 2009 Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year Award.

2) Tan Sri Dato’ Megat Najmuddin Bin Dato’ Seri Dr. Haji Megat Khas

Area of expertise: Various (including Law and Politics)

Affiliation: Sime Darby Plantation

The second of the names directly mentioned by Anwar in his allegations, Tan Sri Dato’ Megat Najmuddin found himself on Anwar’s radar due to his high rank in UMNO previously, and now BERSATU. Incidentally, Megat is also the Chairman of Sime Darby Plantation, another GLC.

With an Honours Degree in Law from Singapore University, Megat seems to have been born for leadership, having been Kelana Jaya State Assemblyman for two terms (1986-1995), President of the Malay College Old Boys’ Association, and municipal Councillor for both MBPJ and MPSJ for a total of 20 years.

3) Raveendren A/L Ramamoothie

Area of expertise: Performance Management

Affiliation: Entomo

Image from: KPISoft/The Rakyat Post

Described by the United States Securities and Exchange Commission as ‘a serial entrepreneur’ who founded KPISoft in 2008 with 4 partners, Ravee was CEO of E-Pedas (the IT subsidiary of Safeguards Securicor), before becoming Managing Director of Southeast Asian boutique performance management consulting firm named AN International.

The Entomo website describes him as having had ‘deep research in the subject of performance management for the past two decades’, while his LinkedIn describes him as the President, CEO, and founder of Entomo.

It’s also worth noting that KPISoft/Entomo is a Singapore-based company, and Ravee is listed as being based in Singapore.

4) Anuar bin Rozhan

Area of expertise: Human Resources, Strategy Implementation

Affiliation: Human Capital Institute SEA and Pacific Sdn Bhd

Image from: Malaysian Institute of Management (MIM) Facebook page

If that name may seem familiar to you, it’s because *surprise surprise*; Entomo co-founder Anuar is actually the brother of former Astro CEO Rohana Rozhan, who was recently called up by the MACC to assist in investigations regarding 1MDB.

He has 35 years of experience in various fields in the UK, Australia, and Malaysia, including Telecommunications, Oil and Gas, and Automotive industries, but his specialty appears to be in consultancy and HR, especially in his role as CEO and Managing Partner of Human Capital Management Institute.

5) Tan Sri Dato’ Sri Liew Kee Sin

Area of expertise: Property Development, Entrepreneurship

Affiliation: EcoWorld Development Group Berhad

Beginning as a banker in 1981, Tan Sri Dato’ Sri Liew Kee Sin would venture into property, founding his own company and later becoming CEO and President of SP Setia, who went on to spearhead the RM40 billion Battersea Power Station project in London in 2012 under Liew’s leadership.  He left SP Setia in 2014, joining EcoWorld as a non-independent and non-executive director, before climbing to the position of executive chairman.

Liew has won numerous accolades thanks to his work in property development, entrepreneurship, leadership and philanthropy, including UK-Malaysia Business Personality of the Year 2018, awarded by the British Chamber of Commerce.

6) Datuk Heah Kok Boon

Area of expertise: Audit, Corporate Finance, Corporate Investment

Affiliation: EcoWorld Development Group Berhad

Alongside Tan Sri Dato’ Sri Liew, Datuk Heah Kok Boon also serves on the EcoWorld Board of Directors as Executive Director and Chief Financial Officer. Starting out in auditing at international accounting firm KPMG, and then in corporate finance in Aseambankers Malaysia Sdn Bhd (now Maybank Investment Bank Berhad).

Like Liew, Heah later also joined SP Setia, building himself an illustrious career for himself there as Head of Corporate Affairs. He resigned in 2013 to join EcoWorld, and is currently focusing on his executive role at the company.

It’s not really clear why MySJ was given the app, and people are asking questions

Anwar isn’t the only politician raising question marks about MySJ’s role in the app takeover; UMNO’s Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan (Tok Mat) also had his doubts as to why MySJ, a private entity, was appointed through direct negotiation, rather than through an open tender exercise, whereby any party could submit an offer to supply their services:

“Let’s not forget that this app was initially developed as a corporate social responsibility to deal with a contagious pandemic.” – Tok Mat

Because as it stands, although KKM has said the amount being negotiated between the government and MySJ is much, much lower than RM300 million, what that money is being used for, and how it will help Malaysians, are very important issues that still have to be properly addressed.
