If you have been living on a rock somewhere out in the vast emptiness of space, you probably would’ve missed this rather unusual article by The Malaysian Insider a few weeks ago. The article talked about recent UFO sightings that took place within the country, where a maaasive other-worldly-looking flying object was seen hovering over Rawang, and another over Seremban.
Just like Agent Mulder, we desperately want to believe in the existence of alien life. Of course, a steady diet of Hollywood sci-fi movies and tv series over the decades is probably to be blamed. But hey, don’t stop believin’ y’all, because the truth is out there… somewhere.
Malaysia seems to have had its fair share of eerie accounts supposedly involving actual, flesh-and-green-blood aliens from space and their flying machines from as waaay back as the early 1900s. SpoOooooOky. ‘Supposedly’ is the keyword here, though. We obviously can’t say for sure whether the accounts are fact or fiction, but what we can say is that some of them will give you the creeps.
So put on your home-made tin-foil hats and grab your favourite snacks, because you’re about to get sucked into 6 of the creepiest UFO and alien encounters Malaysia has ever witnessed:
1. The UFO over Tanjung Sepat Laut, 1995
Let’s kick things off with what was apparently a major incident in Malaysia’s history of UFO sightings, so much so that it led to the hosting of the country’s first (and probably, only) UFO conference.
Between September and October of 1995, the villagers of Tanjung Sepat Laut, Sepang, witnessed an unidentifiable flying object hovering roughly a hundred metres above the forest, half a mile away from their village. In fact, it’s actually close to where the two KLIAs are located today. *cue X-Files music*
The UFO was described as having the same width and length as a football field, and towers as high as a multi-storey building, with multi-coloured lights flashing around it in a circular motion.
The villagers claimed to have seen the object on at least four different occasions, with each sighting ending with the object vanishing into thin air.
As crazy as it may be to have seen what is essentially a football stadium floating in mid-air, what really became the talk of the village (and later, the nation, when major newspapers began running stories about the sightings) was not so much about the UFO itself… but of its occupants. Apparently, the villagers of Tanjung Sepat Laut were somehow able to take note of the occupants’ physical appearance as being about two feet tall, with long ears (or what they assumed were ears) and a pair of red eyes.
Sounds like it may be a space ship full of mini Grinches.
Naturally, no one has managed to snap a single photo of the sightings. And because there weren’t any hard evidence to support the sightings, our authorities at the time refused to investigate.
Our Air Force dismissed the sightings, stating that they “have seen nothing on our air defence screens”, whilst the then-Director-General of Malaysia’s Space Science Studies Division Mazlan Othman (yup, the current director for the United Nations’ Office for Outer Space Affairs), claimed the villagers as having hallucinated or confused planets and/or stars for UFOs, though this seems to be the generally-accepted explanation for UFO sightings worldwide.
2. The flying coffins of Kota Kinabalu, 2002
In October of 2002, air traffic controllers (ATCs) at the Kota Kinabalu International Airport (KKIA) had reportedly spotted an unusually large object in its airspace whilst tracking a Fokker airliner on the runway. The object, which was spotted on radar screens, was said to have been bigger than the airliner, with an elongated cigar-like shape. The ATCs were damn sure that there were no other aircraft in the skies at the time.
Although the UFO was first spotted on radar screens, it was later observed by airport personnels on the ground. One of them, a security guard, claimed to have seen the UFO rising from the direction of the sea and zoomed – silently – over the airport’s Terminal 2 at incredible speeds before disappearing over the nearby hills.
But why was it called a ‘flying coffin’? Why not a ‘flying cigar’, since that’s how the ATCs had described the object?
Well, it just so happens that, as it zoomed over the terminal, the object was briefly recorded by the airport’s close-circuit television (CCTV) cameras that was pointed at the terminal. It’s high-speed movement had created an angular oblong shape on video that looks kinda like a coffin, hence the ‘flying coffin’ moniker.
But you know what….. Malaysia Airports Berhad (MAB), which operates KKIA, claimed that it was not the first time such a thing has been spotted in its airspace. In fact, throughout the seven years prior to this particular incident, there had been at least four other sightings of UFOs of various shape and sizes over the airport.
However, despite having been officially confirmed as a genuine sighting by MAB, the Department of Civil Aviation has never provided an official explanation for the object’s sighting, saying that they could not identify for sure what the object really was. In short, the object remained to this day, literally a UFO.
3. The square-shaped Tambunan Abductor, 2001
In February of 2001, a woman claimed via an official police report that her 45-year-old husband had ‘vanished’ before her very eyes just as they were about to have dinner. Apparently, this wasn’t the first time her husband had spontaneously disappeared without a trace.
We don’t really know how he disappeared the first time around, but when the man was later found, he told his brother-in-law that he had an encounter with what he claimed to be an alien being. He described the alien as having a square head and body (which, we imagine, is kinda like a very poorly rendered Michelin Man), and that the alien had urged him to go to a strange place he had apparently always wanted to go.
What’s just as strange were the circumstances leading up to his second disappearance. His wife claimed that, the night before he vanished, she came upon him dressed all in white, and – get this – levitating. When she reached out and touched him, his clothing slowly turned to black before he collapsed to the ground and passes out.
The man remained missing over the next 11 days (an unusually long time for alien abduction cases), when he suddenly reappeared in a forested area not far from his home on a Friday night. He was seen walking with his eyes shut tight, and when he was reunited with his wife, he communicated only using sign language.
He later underwent medical treatment and checks out fine, although he was then referred for psychiatric treatment. Of course, since anyone who claims to have seen aliens must’ve had a loose screw somewhere, if they weren’t simply hallucinating or sleep walking. But what we’re curious about is this:
Neither his wife nor the police found out where the man had actually gone to, or why, but his claims of having encountered an alien being may have had some truth. According to local ufologist Ahmad Jamaludin, there were in fact UFO activities happening over Kota Kinabalu at the time of the man’s disappearance.
4. The deaths of the SS Ourang Medan Crew, 1947
Ok, this is kinda like an exception la for ugaiz, because while this incident supposedly took place on the Straits of Malacca, it didn’t exactly happened on Malaysian soil or within our airspace. On June of 1947, two American vessels sailing down the Straits of Malacca picked up a chilling distress call in the form of Morse codes. When the codes were translated, it reads out a simple but disturbing message.
“All officers including captain are dead, lying in chartroom and bridge. Possibly whole crew dead.”
The final message that came after, was just grim.
“I die.”
With the help of British and Dutch listening posts, they were able to locate the source of the call: a Dutch merchant freighter known as the SS Ourang Medan. One of the American vessels, called the Silver Star, was closer to where SS Ourang Medan was thought to be, and so they wasted no time in trying to reach the distressed ship.
[The next image may be disturbing. Please be advised.]
Everywhere they looked, corpses of the Dutch crew were found sprawled on their backs, their faces full of horror and their limbs seemingly grasping and pointing at… something. Supposedly, even the ship’s dog met the same fate, with its intimidating snarl on its face, most likely in response to the same thing the crew were reacting to.
No evidence of foul play or injury on the corpses, nor any damage to the ship, was observed. But before the ship could be explorer further, its cargo hold burst into flames, forcing the boarding party to retreat back onto the Silver Star. The SS Ourang Medan eventually exploded and headed for its final resting place deep within the strait.
Many have tried to provide conclusive explanations for the Dutch crew’s horrific and mysterious demise, the more appealing one being the theory of a UFO or alien attack, considering the body language seen on the corpses, including that of the ship’s dog.
A more down-to-earth explanation would be that the ship’s cargo – a supposed mixture of potassium cyanide and nitroglycerine – was a toxic substance of some sort which had somehow caused the crew’s death, although this explanation doesn’t explain the grim body language, or why the boarding crew weren’t affected.
With so many loose ends, it’s common to just assume that this was a hoax. Those who had researched the incident claimed that it was fabricated, as there were no records to even support the existence of the SS Ourang Medan… which is curious, because the United States Coast Guard as well as other notable nautical authors seemed to think the incident was real.
5. The 3-inch tall Bukit Mertajam aliens, 1970
Throughout the 1970s, Bukit Mertajam appeared to be a hot spot for UFO sightings, but what set these sightings apart from most other sightings was this: 3-inch tall aliens and their miniature flying saucers.
Now, they aren’t exactly exclusive to Bukit Mertajam – in fact, they’ve been spotted elsewhere in Malaysia and other parts of the world – but Bukit Mertajam seems to be the only place where repeated sightings of these aliens have taken place.
The earliest reported sighting of the kecik-kecik cili padi Bukit Mertajam aliens occurred on August 19th of 1970, near the playground of the Stowell Primary School. A group of six boys claimed to have witnessed a miniature flying saucer landing in the schoolyard, out of which marched five, 3-inch tall humanoids. The humanoids were supposedly dressed in identical blue uniforms – except for one, which wore a bright yellow tunic and had a pair of ‘horns’ on its head – and they were apparently there to set up an ‘aerial-like device’ of some sort on a nearby tree.
Of course, curiosity got the better of the boys, and they decided to investigate. One of them, a rather brave K. Wigneswaran, approached the tree and tried to grab the yellow-clad leader of the humanoids, but not before the feisty alien defended itself by opening fire on the boys with its tiny ‘laser pistols’.
The sightings were reported in the news over the following days – on the front page of The Straits Times some more – where Wigneswaran’s sketches of the aliens and their miniature flying saucer can be seen.
The school’s headmaster, Ooi Keat Guan, had apparently questioned all six boys to try and figure out whether they had made the whole thing up, but the boys insisted that their sightings were true. According to the news article, Ooi himself doesn’t seem to believe in the boys’ stories, thinking that their overly-active imagination had led them to fabricate sightings of ‘tiny spacemen’ out of misconstrued leaves or insects, but the local residents seem to think that the boys had indeed witnessed something other-worldly, if not out-of-this-world.
6. The strange sounds in the skies of East Malaysia, 2012
In January of 2012, residents of Kota Samarahan reported hearing strange sounds coming from the skies above them. The sound, described as loud roars and referred to as ‘sounds of the apocalypse’ or ‘UFO sounds’, were heard in the early hours of the morning at around 2 to 3 a.m. for three continuous hours on two consecutive nights.
Fortunately, this is one of the few cases where our gomen had actually responded by establishing a special committee to investigate the incident.
It turns out that the sounds were indeed real, though the committee concluded that it was actually caused by a boiler that was used in a nearby oil palm factory. To prove their point, the committee even held a demonstration for the residents where the factory carried out their usual boiler pressure tests.
The residents who had heard the original loud roars find the factory recreation to be pretty close, though they find it hard to believe that sounds from a factory located 8 kilometres away could’ve travelled such long distances and still be so loud. Add that to the fact that there weren’t any explanations as to why the pressure tests were conducted only on those two nights.
Apparently, the strange sounds aren’t just unique to the area, as it had also been heard in various parts of the globe. It seems very unlikely that all those places where the sounds were heard just happened to have oil palm factories nearby that’s creating the roars.
Here’s one from Hong Kong that occurred within the same year. Kaiju, anyone?
And here’s one from earlier this year in Sabah, in which the loud roars are much clearer.
Whatever may be the causes for these strange sounds, NASA seems to think that they’re nothing to worry about. Apparently, these sounds have always been around but we just don’t seem to be paying attention. Pfft.

These 6 sightings got us thinking:
What is our gomen doing about aliens and their fancy ships??
Well… not much, really. And that’s kinda scary considering that we have UNIDENTIFIED flying objects violating our airspace. Seriously, what if the objects turned out to be some secret experimental project by a foreign military that’s capable of creating havoc upon a nation?
What if the objects aren’t man-made at all, and that they are something that could potentially disrupt the way we humans view ourselves in the grand scheme of things? We will never know unless they are being studied seriously.
Until then, the true origin and purpose of these creepy objects and creatures would remain a mystery. But! As as scientific certainty of intelligent alien life and their technologies gain traction in mainstream media, and as we become more interested in the exploration of space (like sending off Malaysia’s second angkasawan into orbit), it’s only a matter time before more meaningful encounters with these other-worldly travellers are reported.
For the time being, though, we’ll just keep ourselves entertained with whatever sightings that goes viral.
