So we’ve all been there before. You get so busy at work that you wake up one morning to find that you’re out of underwear, socks, or a clean outfit. Next thing you know, you’re doing the walk of shame into the office wearing dirty laundry that you fished out of the basket.
While there’s nothing that can be done for your work-life balance, coin laundromat dobiQueen reached out to us with a solution that will at least solve the laundry problem – a pickup, wash, and delivery service. In KL and most of Klang Valley for now at least.
For full disclosure, we actually declined their offer to try it out back in April but, as luck would have it, this writer ran out of socks during a busy patch at work. Worse, he realized he didn’t have a clean Baju Melayu two days before our video editor’s wedding (Congrats Alif!).
So we reached out to dobiQueen and said yes to the (clean) dress.
dobiQueen can clean, fold and deliver your laundry in 6 HOURS
So let’s just get this out of the way – this service isn’t for you if:
- You have a working washing machine at home, and the time to use it
- You have the time to go to the laundromat yourself
But if you’re short of time or feeling particularly unmotivated, then your lamentable laundry can be transformed into wondrous wearables (yes, we spin words like a 25kg dryer) in just 5 clicks.
So, first you gotta head over to the dobiQueen website, where you’ll be able to pick your package(s) based on the size of the wash. In our experience, the number of clothing pieces doesn’t matter, but you’d probably have a better gauge of the weight if you’ve used a coin laundromat machine before. Either way, dobiQueen provides a size guide based on Ikea bags, or you can buy their laundry bags that come with measurements.
Once you’ve filled in your address at checkout, you’ll be given 4 delivery options:
Basically, a wash would normally take 2 days, but you can arrange for a same-day service if you place your order before 12pm. Also, the door-to-door option is for people who are in condos or office complexes. If you live in a landed house or don’t mind meeting the delivery person at the guardhouse, you can just pick the options without door-to-door. Cheaper also.
In our experience, the pickup process was relatively smooth except for the Lalamove driver not being prepared to carry down 5 bags of laundry. Nevertheless, he was a champ about it and declined our offer to help.
Updates were sent via Whatsapp, so we knew exactly when the laundered clothes will be sent back. dobiQueen advertises that the laundry can be sent back in 6 hours and they were pretty much on the dot – our order was picked up around 12pm and delivered back at 5:49pm. We found out later that it was actually possible to have different pick-up and drop-off destinations (ie, pick up from home and send to office) but we didn’t get to try this feature.
Either way, when we got home, we were greeted with 5 bags of fresh, clean laundry that was neatly folded and wrapped in paper for extra protecc. Very nice.
It’s not cheap – but you get more than what you pay for
Obviously, this service will cost you more than doing it yourself. As a comparison, our bill came up to RM141 when it would have cost us about RM60 – RM70 if we took it to the laundromat ourselves. However, that would also have involved driving to the laundromat, waiting, and folding your own laundry… or about 2-3 hours out of your day.
The thing about laundromats is that you shouldn’t be leaving your clothes in the machines after they’re done (which we’ve seen quite often), otherwise you’d risk your clothes being removed from the machine or having the next three generations of your family cursed for being inconsiderate. This means that you kinda have to be around the entire time. So what you’re really paying for is the time and convenience because, if you’ve been pulling 11 hour days at the office during a crunch, nothing beats coming home to the sight of clean laundry ready to be hung or stuffed into a drawer.
Would we use this on a regular basis? We’d be tempted to, but it’s painful on the wallet ngl.
But in a crunch or when there’s an important event the next day? We’ll be clicking over to dobiQueen’s website, not even sheeting you.
