Welcome to The Kuala Lumpur-Nanjing-Hong Kong Roving Architecture Exhibition!

The Kuala Lumpur-Nanjing-Hong Kong Roving Architecture Exhibition, themed “Harmony in Diversity-Connecting the Metropolis by In-Between,” commenced in Kuala Lumpur on 22nd July, marking the first stop of this esteemed architectural showcase. Presented by The Hong Kong Institute of Architects Biennale Foundation (HKIABF) in partnership with The Hong Kong Institute of Architects (HKIA), the exhibition honors Hong Kong’s unique urban landscape and its innovative response to future spatial planning challenges.

Located at Rumah Tangsi, in the heart of Kuala Lumpur, the exhibition will be open until 7th August 2023. Featuring 16 exhibits crafted by different professional groups and architects from Hong Kong, the curation, masterminded by Ar Professor Paul Chu, Ar Jacky Cheung, and Mr. Kan Chan, beautifully showcases the essence of harmony and diversity in Hong Kong’s architecture, emphasizing the juxtaposition of modernism and orientalism.

Inspired by the concept of “in-between,” the curatorial team expertly paired exhibits in different zones, creating a seamless flow of contrasting yet complementary architectural experiences. Specially designed interactive display frames facilitate interaction among exhibits and visitors, enabling attendees to explore the exhibition limitlessly.

Ar Julia Lau, Chairperson of The Hong Kong Institute of Architects Biennale Foundation, expressed immense delight in taking the Roving Architecture Exhibition to the global stage, presenting Hong Kong architects and their distinctive creations to audiences beyond their homeland. She praised the curatorial team and exhibitors for their valuable exploration and imagination, asserting that the exhibition will significantly impact the development of Hong Kong’s architecture and urban landscape.

Ar Benny Chan, President of The Hong Kong Institute of Architects and a partner of the Roving Architecture Exhibition, lauded the event for uniting architects from different generations. Beyond being a platform for industry exchange, he emphasized its role in showcasing the unique essence of Hong Kong’s architecture to diverse regions.

The exhibition provides a captivating exploration of the intricate relationship between architecture and urban space through the lens of local architects. The exhibits incorporate cutting-edge presentation methods, such as metaverse technology, multimedia players, interactive installations, and visual artistry, to highlight the city’s unique architectural and urban characteristics, and elegantly portray the harmonious blend of contrasting elements that define Hong Kong’s ever-evolving and ever-adapting urban landscape.

Undoubtedly, this exhibit will leave its visitors with much to think about on the topic of the future of urban planning in Hong Kong amidst forthcoming challenges.

Following its successful opening in Kuala Lumpur, the exhibition will journey to Nanjing, China, for its second stop from October to November, and will then return to Hong Kong in the first quarter of 2024 with a response exhibition.
