Malaysia’s harga petrol is actually one of the cheapest in the world!

How to know someone is Malaysian? For sure they will complain about expensive petrol 🤠 But according to a study that measures how much petrol you can buy with a single salary, petrol prices in Malaysia are actually super affordable compared to other countries! Ha, now all kenot complain anymore already ahh..

Basically, this whole thing is called the ‘petrol index’. It’s kinda like the Big Mac index, but instead of burgers, it’s comparing how easy it is to afford petrol. Now are y’all ready to know what Malaysia scored?

Ta-da! It’s 1805 litres of petrol! Well, that number probably doesn’t mean much right now, but we’ll fill you up with all the details below.

1. Malaysia got the lowest petrol price in Asia!

And we’re the lowest price by a loooooong mile, guys. In fact, Indonesia, which has the next cheapest price, is almost 2x more expensive than ours. Memang very ngam lah when they say Malaysia truly Asia✨ And what’s more, we’re actually in the top 10 of cheapest petrol prices in the world!

Ah, so proud to be cheap. Screenshot from Global Petrol Prices.

But you know what’s interesting? Our petrol price has actually not changed for over 2 years now! And that’s cos a certain disease… and war… has wrecked so much havoc on global oil prices that it’s become super expensive. So our government basically went nope and set a max limit of RM2.05 for Ron95.

2. Malaysia is the 5th most affordable country to buy petrol

Ugh, so close to a podium finish… But where we won on on cheap petrol prices, our wages are a totally different story. And by that we mean they’re hella low🥹

But you know who has the highest wages in the region? Australia. So now you know why your parents always nag you to go work there. And since they can afford more, naturally their petrol index also high lo. In contrast, the average Malaysian earns 6x less at just RM3,700 a month. So 5th out of 17 it is!

Don’t mind us, just dreaming about the wages in Australia.

(And no, we won’t be discussing the fact that Singapore beat us… again)

3. Petrol is technically getting cheaper in Malaysia

We can hear some of you guys going clickbaaiiiiiit in the background so let’s clear things up, ok? So the price memang has stayed the same, as we explained earlier. But from the table below, you’ll see that our petrol index has been increasing steadily over the years, meaning it’s becoming more affordable and we’re now able to buy more.

Let’s just ignore 2020 orrite

And that’s because our wages have changed! Between last year and this year, our monthly average increased by about RM30— and while you won’t be using that money to buya new car anytime soon, it’s more than enough to cover the petrol cost of a roadtrip from Penang to KL. But if stuck in jam, don’t blame us lah.
