Australia’s NEXTDC to build RM3 Billion data centre in Malaysia
The Australian High Commission Malaysia shared the announcement by NEXTDC, a leading data centre operator in Australia, on its plans to build their first ever overseas data centre in Malaysia. This investment marks a significant milestone for NEXTDC international expansion plan and would further develop digital economy in Malaysia.
In the next 5 to 10 years, NEXTDC plans to invest a sum of RM 3 billion (AUD 1 billion) in Malaysia, with further investments by 2033. This will not only create more job and employment opportunities but also increase the development of critical infrastructure required to advance Malaysia’s digital economy.

The main investment is the construction of the KL1 data centre in PJ, a 65-megawatt Colocation Data Centre. The KL1 data centre will cater to cloud platform providers, enterprise clients and government entities throughout Malaysia. On top of that, the KL1 will be the first Tier IV which is the first facility above 5-megawatts in Peninsular Malaysia. This would make it the most technologically advanced, fault-tolerant, secure and sustainable data centre according to industry standards.
This NEXTDC investment is set to establish a multidisciplinary Regional Operations Centre in Malaysia, which will be the hub for the company’s expansion into other Asian markets. This will also contribute to the digital skilling and educational initiative, which will develop Malaysia’s ICT and digital workforce.

In attendance of the launch was YB Ahmad Fahmi bin Mohamed Fadzil, Malaysia’s Minister of Communications and Digital, and YAB Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari, the Chief Minister of Selangor.
Also in attendance was Sam Lim, a Malaysian-born Member of the Australian Parliament for Tangney; who said that this launch underscores the close economic partnership between our two countries.
