How long will you have to save up to afford Najib and Rosmah’s seized assets?

Ahh… the Pavilion Residences. A luxury condo befitting the likes of our ex-PM Najib, and ex-First Lady Rosmah, it was one of a few locations the PDRM raided in 2018 in relation to Bossku’s corruption scandal, and oh boy what a series of raids they were.

The boxes upon boxes upon luggage bags that were carted out from the condo’s entrance were eye-popping, to say the least. Now, we’re pretty sure y’alls first thought was probably ‘Wahlau, how much is all of that worth?’, cuz that’s exactly what we were thinking. Well, four years or so after the raids, we feel like it’s about time everyone’s curiosity is sated, so we compiled (as best we can) a list of what’s been seized from the raids, how much the assets amount to, and how long you’ll have to save up to be able to afford them if you earn RM3K a month. Prepare to feel very, very B40.

Smol disclaimer: Again, we tried our best to make the list as complete and as accurate as possible, but we had to estimate the values of some of this stuff. If y’all know the actual figures, hit us up and we’ll stick ’em in.

1. 567 handbags – Estimated RM61.4 million

272 of her now-infamous Hermes Birkin handbags alone were worth USD$12.7 million at the time, which translates to around RM55 million today. While we couldn’t find the value of the rest of the bags, they included brands like Prada, Chanel, Judith Leiber, and Bijan.

The most expensive Prada and Chanel bags that are on Zalora are priced at around RM20K each, so we took that figure and multiplied it by 295, and added that to RM55 million. There is a good chance that she didn’t get her bags off Zalora tho, and they probably cost more in reality, so… yeah. RM61.4 million sounds like a pretty generous estimate.

How long it’ll take for you to be able to afford the bags: 1,705.5 years

2. 423 watches – Estimated RM78 million

The most expensive of which is this Paul Newman Rolex Daytona – RM3.5 million. Img by HODINKEE.

The PDRM seized over 100 brands of watches with brands like Rolex, Chopard, and Richard Mille in the mix. Oh, and the Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Offshore Diver Carbon that Najib is wearing in the featured image? That’ll set you back a cool RM165,567.

How long it’ll take for you to be able to afford the watches: 2,166.6 years

3. About 12,000 jewelry items – Estimated RM660 million

We can only imagine what it’s like walking into a room that housed:

  • 1,400 necklaces
  • 2,200 rings
  • 2,100 bangles
  • 2,800 pairs of earrings
  • 1,600 brooches
  • 14 tiaras

…but it must’ve been like a set from a Pirates of the Caribbean film. Apparently, the single most expensive piece of jewelry seized was a yellow-gold necklace with diamonds worth RM6.4 million (including workmanship).

How long it’ll take for you to be able to afford this treasure trove: 18,333.3 years

4. 234 pairs of sunglasses – Estimated RM374K

A pair of those is worth like RM1.6K, baybeeee.

How long it’ll take for you to be able to afford the sunglasses: 10.4 years

5. An estimated RM116.7 million in cash

Currencies from 26 countries were found in 35 bags, including 2.87 million Sri Lankan rupees (about RM34K today). According to Amar Singh, the Director of PDRM’s Commercial Criminal Investigation Department, it took 22 officials from Bank Negara 3 days to count the money.

How long it’ll take for you to be able to save up the cash: 3,241.6 years

Where are all the confiscated items now?

After doing a bit of quick math, all the items hauled off by the PDRM hauled off amounted to roughly RM1.2 billion, and if you earn RM3K a month, you can’t spend any money on anything else for 25457.4 years to buy everything in the catalog. In 2019, the courts dismissed the government’s application to forfeit:

  • 11,991 jewelry items
  • 401 watch straps and 16 watch accessories
  • 234 pairs of sunglasses
  • 306 handbags
  • RM114,164,393.44 in cash

…and while the government initially wanted to appeal against the dismissal of the forfeiture suit, they’ve opted not to do so in the end, so as of now, the cash has been returned to Najib and UMNO. As far as we can tell, Najib and Rosmah are still trying to lay claim to the rest of the items which appear to be stored at Bank Negara pending the conclusion of the case. Just a few days ago, Rosmah and a Lebanese jewelry company are fighting over a white gold diamond bracelet worth approximately RM960K, and Najib wants 7 of his watches back.

So, yeah, we’ll keep y’all updated if any more of the stuff gets returned to Najib, Rosmah, or other third parties. Until then, toodles.
